Value : exchange

With any interaction, the key to understanding its purpose and leading to a positive conclusion is grasping one another’s value and the reason for its exchange.

In Career Progression:

Understand what you bring to the team, what you bring to the organization. How you get measured and how you perform within that framework. This is your value.

Understand the person who part takes in the value exchange this may be your manager or director. What’s in it for them? What value to you bring to increase their value to their peers. What do they want in return? What’s the exchange.

For example : You bring on a new client and deliver 20% YoY growth to your portfolio. This not only heightens your value, it also heightens the value of the total Revenue managed by your director. Growth is of value to you both, and understanding how to position it and how it can add value to those who matter within the context can bring great benefit to all parties involved.

Next time you work on a client pitch or build out a project write down the values for you, and for your key stakeholders — and be clear what you’re exchanging.
