How to improve User Testing
User testing is one of the main process of designing. Without testing, the solution would not make sense.
- Test as soon as you can: my opinion is to test as soon as possible, do not wait until the end. It will be easier for you to make changes along the process!
- Be clear: define your goals. Before starting a test, try to define what and why you need to know.
- Always ask open questions. I met so many people who talk a LOT. When you are testing a user, let the USER speak. Learn from them. It’s not about you..
- Designing is dynamic. It’s not always a linear process. Try to make tests at every steps.
- Test real users, not your family. Obviously we all went through this phase when we started. It’s good at the beginning, to get familiar with the process, but try to switch as soon as you can to testing/interviewing real users. You need unbiased opinion.
- Tasks are helpful. During your user testing, try to create some tasks.. It will get you more insights than you think! Getting feedback while your user interacts with the product, is more important than getting an answer to questions like “Rate this app from 1 to 10”.
- Observe behaviour. I always loved contextual inquiry. You will get valuable information by looking at the context of use. Don’t forget to listen!
- Don’t solve everything at once. Solutions and answers to your problems will come in time, iterate, and you will see that they knock at your door!
My advice then is to test as many time as you can: testing can make or break your product idea!
