A Message from UM’s Incoming President

I am thrilled and honored to join the University of Montana team! While my wife, Chelsea, and I are admittedly still processing the exciting events of the past 24 hours, we cannot wait to get to Missoula and get to work.

We were truly inspired during our visit to campus two weeks ago. The passion of this community and your deep commitment to the University’s success are incredible. Our visit was jam-packed with events each day from 5 a.m. until 9 p.m., but I can honestly say that we departed Missoula with more energy than when we arrived. It was terrific to spend time with such a vibrant and diverse group of people so committed to the important mission of UM.

We are all aware that the University of Montana — like many institutions of higher education — faces some challenges, but I know with certainty that this institution’s best days are ahead. We have tremendous assets that provide a great platform for growth — numerous academic programs and centers that are global leaders, a strong and growing research enterprise, transformational philanthropy, a fantastic partnership with a wonderful community in a beautiful setting, and most importantly, an engaged team of faculty, staff, students and alumni.

When I visited campus, I said that I believe the University of Montana should strive to be the premier Flagship University of the Mountain West. And while I know that’s an ambitious goal and that we have work to do, I’d challenge everyone on this campus to ask the question, “Why not us?” The necessary ingredients are here — let’s make it happen!

The search for a new president has been a long one, and I know that as I come on board I have a lot to learn. I look forward to listening, watching and learning from all of you. I’m a huge believer in the importance of teams, and the success of this University depends on having a great team of deans, faculty, staff, students and alumni all working together and rowing in the same direction. You have my firm commitment that I will pour my heart and soul into this place and that I will do everything I possibly can to ensure the success of this great team. You will not find a more passionate advocate for this University and the importance of what you do every day.

I believe that leadership is not granted; it’s earned. And every day that I have the privilege to serve as the President of this great University, I will work tirelessly to earn that right and to enable every member of the UM team to reach their full potential and to do the best work of their lives.

I am grateful for the confidence placed in me by the selection committee and by the Board of Regents, and I am looking forward to working closely with President Stearns over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition.

Go Griz!

Seth Bodnar
